🧠How your brain changes

Did you know… why is it so difficult to change  even when you genuinely want to?

For a long time, I asked myself this question, especially as life brought changes I didn’t choose.

Your Brain Isn’t Built for Change – It’s Built for Survival

The brain’s top priorities are safety and energy efficiency.

That’s why:

  • It runs on autopilot to save energy
  • It clings to the familiar because it feels safe
  • New habits feel tiring and uncomfortable at first

This isn’t a flaw. It’s biology.

My Lived Reality With MS

Living with MS means dealing with brain damage that affects movement, focus, energy, coordination and daily routin.

And still… despite the challenges, the brain’s ability to adapt continues to amaze me

Even when parts of it are damaged, the brain can search for new ways to function.
It can shift responsibilities, rewire, reorganize, and rebuild.

That remarkable ability is called neuroplasticity.

The Brain Changes Itself in 3 Powerful Ways

🧪 1. Chemical Changes – Fast, Immediate Shifts

These involve changes in neurotransmitters that influence motivation, mood and energy.
Example: Starting something new can feel “off” because your brain isn’t yet releasing the same feel-good chemicals associated with old routines.
With repetition, the chemistry begins to support the new behavior.

🧩 2. Structural Changes – Slow, Long-Term Rewiring

This is the physical reshaping of your brain.
Neurons build new connections, strengthen old ones or prune unused pathways.
Example: Learning a new skill or routine strengthens the neural pathway over time – like paving a new road, brick by brick.

🔁 3. Functional Changes – New Patterns of Communication

Different brain regions learn to communicate in new or alternative ways.
This one is deeply personal for me.
With MS, when certain areas are damaged, my brain works to reroute signals so tasks that once felt simple can become possible again, just through different pathwaysThis is the brain’s quiet determination to keep going.

The 3 Rules of Changing Your Brain:

🔁 Repeat what matters — what you practice grows
Neurons that fire together, wire together
Use it or lose it — your brain keeps what you use

Every repetition — even the smallest one — sends a message:
“Build this. Strengthen this. Keep this.”

It’s not about perfection.
It’s about repetition, compassion, and consistency.

🌱 Change may feel slow… but it’s never impossible.
